Juja MP Francis Munyua has raised concerns over the re-emergence of illicit brews in the constituency and wants the chiefs to act immediately.

Speaking at St Jude Primary School in Juja on Monday, the MP said that there are reports of some people engaging in illicit brewing and sale of second generation alcoholic drinks in Juja and neighbouring estates.

Munyua asked local chiefs and the police to conduct raids and destroy the illicit brews.

The lawmaker said that he will not allow the re-introduction of illicit brews in the constituency.

“There are reports that some people within Juja and neighbouring estates have re-introduced illicit brews and illegal alcoholic drinks. Police have to move with speed and arrest the culprits,” he said.

The MP said that alcohol abuse has been the main problem facing young people in the area. He also blamed illicit brewing and drinking to high poverty levels in the area. Munyu said that he will not rest until illicit brewing is completely tamed in the area.

In July this year, there was a major crackdown on illicit brewer dens and sellers of second generation alcoholic drinks across Kiambu County.

The crackdown was ordered by President Uhuru Kenyatta after several cases of deaths were reported as a result of poisonous brews and alcoholic drinks. The MP’s concerns come as the Kiambu county commissioner Alex Nkoyo says that illicit brewers will be fought to the end.

In a briefing with journalists on Sunday after a security meeting in Thika, Nkoyo warned brewers saying that they will be hunted down. The county commissioner urged local chiefs to ensure that their areas are free of illicit brews and second generation alcoholic drinks.
