Speaking on Monday evening while addressing truck drivers along Kangundo road Muthama said that the people of Machakos have a right to protest anytime they feel they are not served well by the leaders they chose.

This is after the police threw teargas to disperse traders in Machakos town who demonstrated protesting over high tax rates that are meant to weaken their bussineses.

He also said that its unethical for the police to obey orders of beating up protestors and throwing teargas on them even when the demonstrations are peaceful.

"These people put us leaders in office and if we are not living up to what we promised them during campaigns they have a democratic right to demonstrate and force us to be accountable," said Muthama.

He therefore urged the police force to avoid being misled by leaders to beat up peaceful demonstrators.

Muthama was accompanied by his cord coalition counterpart and siaya senator James Orengo who also seconded his view by saying that the protestors are fighting for their rights.

Minister for decentralised governments in the county of Machakos county who also addressed the truck drivers said that the matter will be looked into but protests are no way of passing grievances.
