Machakos County Governor Alfred Mutua has said the county government has not received the El Nino mitigation funds that were set aside by the national government.
Speaking on Wednesday at the county headquarters when he held a meeting with county MCAs, Mutua said his government was well prepared but the national government failed him by not releasing the funds on time, to enable the county government to compensate affected residents.
The governor said the money which the county government is currently using to mitigate the effects of the El Nino rains is not enough to compensate residents who have incurred losses following the heavy rains.
"We have not gotten a single cent of the El Nino funds from the national government. The money we have in the county budget is not enough to compensate affected residents,” said Mutua.
He added, "I would like to urge the national government to release the money as soon as possible so that we can save our people from suffering.”
This comes after a section of county leaders and residents urged the governor to utilise the El Nino funds to avert disaster and compensate affected residents.
