National Authority for Campaign against Drug Abuse (Nacada) Chairman John Mututho has raised concerns over the use of tankers and trailers to ferry illicit brews.
Mututho has pointed out that traders and manufacturers are ferrying the liquor disguising it as petrol.
“We have received reports and confiscated some tankers which were laden with drinks. Trailers are also being used to transport the liquid in the country from different regions,” he added.
Mututho was speaking to the press on Tuesday at a Nakuru hotel where he called on the traffic police to conduct searches on all vehicles on Kenyan roads.
“Alcohol is being transported in bulk. Traders are slowly becoming crafty in their dealings and this is why the fight against illicit brew has been difficult,” he added.
According to Mututho, plans were underway to construct rehabilitation centres in all the 47 counties.
“This will help addicts from relapsing or going back to their previous habits,” he added.
Among the methods Nacada intends to use in the rehabilitation is the use of pills and implants to reduce the desire among addicts. Mututho pointed out that there are at least 2.6 to 3 million Kenyans are addicted to different substances.
“We will ensure that we conduct rehabilitation to all Kenyans whether addicted to sex, drugs or alcohol,” he added.
