On Friday last week, President Uhuru Kenyatta launched a multi-million street lighting project at Mombasa's Old Town at Makadara grounds.
The project dubbed Mwangaza Mtaani, is expected to uplift the lives of Old Town residents, which is the face of Mombasa town.
Three days after the launch, residents have expressed views about the project and their expectations.
To the traders, the impact of the initiative is already visible as most of them say their businesses are now flourishing as they can operate until late hours. They say their profits have marginally improved and their expectations to have prosperous ventures are almost coming true.
Omar Hassan, 27, a resident of Kibokoni, says he used to close his shop at 8 pm due to insecurity, but since the streets were lit, things have changed.
"My shop is now doing very well. At least the profits are increasing. If this goes on for the next one year, my business will have moved to the another level," he said.
He says the project is good especially to the residents of Old Coast where insecurity is rampant.
Abdul Mwadhini also praised the project saying his fruits venture will hit new heights as he will not be closing business early as he used to.
'I will now be able to run my business until 10 pm,' said a happy Mwadhini.
Insecurity which is very rampant in the area is also expected to reduce remarkably and residents are already starting to see the signs.
As Peter Otieno says; there will be 'new life' in the area. He said before, it was very dangerous to walk past 8 pm, something he says has now changed.
'You could not walk here carelessly. That has changed since last week,' he said.
