Kisii County Commissioner Chege Mwangi has challenged Kisii leaders to include women in leadership positions and other development projects.
According to Mwangi, very few women from Gusii region are in leadership positions and there is need for Kisii community to empower them.
Speaking on Sunday at Kisii Stadium during a fund drive organised by Maendeleo ya Wanawake group, Mwangi challenged Kisii community to support women in leadership since the percentage of women who are in leadership in Kisii region is far much less compared to men.
“I appeal to Kisii community to team up our women in leadership, let us try to give them a voice by supporting them, I know they can be the best,” he said.
He added: “Some of men who are here today may not feel happy for that appeal but let us try to support women in leadership and give them an opportunity to lead in some sectors”.
Mwangi also challenged Non Government Organisations to support women to realise their vision in developing Gusii region.
His sentiments were supported by Nandi County Women Representative Zipporah Keringi by stressing that women should vie for different seats rather than depending on women rep seat only.
More than Sh2.1 million was collected at the fundraiser.
