As most people complain of lack of jobs and wait with the hope of getting a white collar job, others have found a way to earn money from their talents and skills.
Mama Jane Akinyi of Kamukunji area is one of the people benefiting from skills acquired from her parents in 1990.
Jane, a single mother, said Wednesday that she loves engaging in money generating activities such as art because it helps feed her family.
"I was observing how my mother and father were weaving products using different materials and I got interested in their work. I slowly started weaving. My parents could weave using sisal threads, dry but wet banana leaves, old clothes and even wet reeds from our farm,’ she said .
‘’The difference between my parents and I is that I have taken my job as my only source of income. My parents used to give away their art materials as gifts to visitors and their friends. If they sold then it was at a very low price,’ she added.
"I weave from polythene bags which I usually pick from dumpsites, after washing them, I let them dry and are ready to be used. Mostly I sell my bags depending on your bargaining power but the least goes for Sh350. Most of my customers are within Kibera,’’she concluded.
