Naivasha Maendeleo ya Wanawake chairperson Esther Nyokabi has expressed concern over the alleged discrimination in the issuance of national identity cards to youth in the sub-county.
Nyokabi said it is against the Constitution to discriminate youths on tribal lines in issuance of IDs.
Speaking on Thursday at Kihoto shopping center, the Maendeleo ya Wanawake chair said some youth seeking the vital documents have been turned away.
“When a youth goes to seek an ID from registrations offices, he/she is told to go back to his native land and this does not auger well with the national values,” said Nyokabi.
She called on the government to intervene and assist the youth to access the documents.
“The government has a responsibility of ensuring every youth is accorded the right to access ID without discrimination “, said Nyokabi .
She also called on youth to apply for the IDs to enable them to participate in the 2017 general elections.
She further called on the residents of Kihoto and Mirera to enhance and sustain processes that alleviate ethnic discrimination and promote diversity.
“There is need for all Naivasha residents to foster concepts of national cohesion and integration in reference to the Constitution,” she said.
