People living near Gioto dump site in Nakuru want the county government to stop dumping waste in the area for fear of disease outbreak.
Speaking on Friday, the residents led by community elder Philip Kinuthia said that the existence of the dump site in the area was posing a serious health hazard especially during this rainy period.
They called on the county government to find an alternative dumping site at least for the time being. "All this filth will be carried down to our doorsteps if the rains continue and that may be too detrimental to our health. Can't the county government find an alternative place to channel the waste," Kinuthia wondered.
Ms Mary Njeri whose food kiosk overlooks the dump site said that she risked closing business if the rains continued since chances of disease outbreak were becoming higher.
"This dump site will cost me my business if it is not shut because I do not want to take chances with my customers’ health," she said.
She added that street children rummaging for food and other items in the dump site also used the site to relieve themselves further compounding the already bad situation.
