Thika sub-county’s new traffic base commander, William Uhuru, on Sunday conducted an operation aimed at eliminating unroadworthy vehicles.

Following the operation, the traffic police netted about 18 vehicles along Thika road and parts of Thika town roads.

The new officer said that the police were targeting all types of vehicles in the operation, adding that the swoop was successful.

Uhuru noted that the operation was not special because it was his first day in office in Thika, saying that it was just a normal crackdown and it was to be carried out randomly to make sure that the vehicles that were on the roads did meet the required standards.

He cautioned all road users to follow traffic rules to book so as to help them reduce carnage.

The officer said that most of the accidents were preventable and asked passengers to report any incidents to the police for quick redress. He promised to act on the tips given to them accordingly.

He also condemned passengers who kept silent while their lives were put in danger when they allowed the drivers and touts overload the vehicle and drive speedily instead he told them to take charge of the situation and refuse to board any vehicle that was overloaded in that way it will help in a preventing accidents.

The officer from Tharaka Nithi has replaced immediate former commander Ms Apelles Chacha who was sent to Yatta sub-county.
