Kabondo sub county hospital received mega boost on Thursday after a Christian Non-Governmental Organisation donated medical equipment worth Sh25 million.

The equipment included X- ray, ultra sound, surgery machines and blood pressure machines.

Diakonia Compassionate Ministry Executive director Rev David Chuchu said the equipment is aimed at improving health provision in Homa Bay county.

He said the donation will also help people from Kisumu County who visit the hospital.

Chuchu said through partners in the USA, the equipment would improve on theatre, diagnosis, physiotherapy, maternity and general in patient services.

Speaking on during the handing over of the equipment at the facility, he urged the county government to assign a medical engineer at the hospital to assemble and service the equipment.

Chuchu request the sub county medical team to distribute the completely assembled equipment to other facilities based on their needs and capacity.

He said health is a fundamental component of development noting that the county still records high household poverty.

Chuchu said Homa Bay has reported desperate cases of under-staffing and lack of medical equipment in most of the facilities which require more funding.

He noted that accurate diagnosis form almost 75 per cent of treatment.

It is evident that patients suffer for long or die to either inaccurate or wrong diagnosis over lack of equipment.

“Our hospitals have the capacity to perform surgeries which Kenyans seek in India and other countries if they are equipped with right machines,” Chuchu said.

The county has 211 health facilities which are manned by 941 personnel mostly nurses with a doctor- population ratio still at 1:40,000 and nurse -population ratio at 1:1,500.

Chuchu asked the county government to invest more on the health docket to address the challenges facing the docket.

Diakonia is also supporting 34 community units carrying out community case management of malaria paying each of the 340 CHWs a monthly stipend of Sh2,000.

Kabondo Kasipul MP Silvance Osele thanked Diakonia for donating the equipment to the facility. He pledged more funding to the facility to upgrade it to level five.

Osele said Sh2million has been disbursed for the construction of maternity wing with an ambulance of Sh7 million already purchased for the hospital.
