A Non Governmental Organisation has announced its intention of planting 1 million trees in Machakos county in a forestation campaign. The Machakos based Beryl Foundation, an NGO that deals with environmental sustainability intends to hit the 1 million target by the year 2020.
The NGO's Chief Executive Officer Henry Kioko who spoke to this Hivisasa writer on Monday said that the initiative was under a project dubbed 'Look for a reason to plant trees; a million trees million dreams campaign' that targeted to plant a million trees across Machakos county.
Kioko said that the project would ensure that each of the 1, 000 public schools both primary and secondary has 1, 000 trees planted in them by the organisation within the stated time frame.
He noted that the project launched in February this year had already seen 102, 000 trees planted within some of the schools in the region.
Kioko called on members of the public, private and public institutions, donor organisations and both the national and Machakos county government to give a helping hand towards the initiative so as to enable the organisation to hit its target.
