Parents in Njoro sub-county have praised President Uhuru Kenyatta for supporting more than 200 needy students in the area.
The students are among this year’s beneficiaries of a national presidential bursary channelled from the education sponsorship plan aimed at helping needy students across the country.
The programme, fully funded by the Office of the President, is aimed at sponsoring bright but poor students especially orphans and other vulnerable children access basic education.
Parents who spoke to this writer called on the students to appreciate the Head of State’s gesture by performing exemplary in class.
“It’s every parent’s wish to have the children attain the highest education level possible, but harsh economic times and poverty was the major hitch. So once a student gets such a chance of being sponsored, they ought to lead by example.” noted Eliakim Bojera, a parent.
The parents believe such initiatives will prove critical in future saying that breeding an educated generation was the best thing any society could do in this modern world.
Area MP Joseph Kiuna expressed his satisfaction with all bursaries directed from different sources saying that their commitment was to foresee a fully educated society.
“As leaders, we are trying anything possible within our capacity to ensure that all needy students get the chance of realising their dreams academically, it’s up to you to replicate that by making good use of this rare chance because you are not special than any other student who has been forced out of school because of a similar problem,” he said after handing over the cheques to students of Njoro Central Secondary school.
He cited the county government, the national government, Equity Bank through the Wings to Fly programme and the Constituency Development Fund office as among those committed to supporting education in the area, something he believes is an indicator of a brighter future of the constituency.
“An enlightened society is a developed one and with all this institutions supporting education, in think the future is in safe hands,” Kiuna added.
He further committed to improving infrastructure in various schools in the area through the CDF kitty and cautioned youths against dropping out of school to engage in the boda boda business.
Selected students from Mwigito Excel Secondary, Gichobo Secondary and Piave Secondary schools also benefitted from the sponsorship.
