Residents of Njoro, Nakuru County on Tuesday held a demonstration demanding immediate closure of drainage systems from Bliss Flora flower farm that lead to their farms, which they said pose health hazards to them.
The angry residents were led by Nessuit Ward MCA and former Nakuru County Assembly Deputy Speaker Samuel Tonui who said that the dam had cut out bridges in the area, seeping into farmlands and affecting agricultural production in the area, posing a threat ahead of the El Nino rains.
"This dam do not meet the international standards required for dam construction. It is with this regard that we appeal to the flower farm management to re-construct the dam and help end this problem that has affected residents since 2007," Tonui said.
According to the residents, the flower farm management has failed to manage the water seepage from the farm connecting over 1,0000 locals while also issuing a seven-day notice to the Bliss Flora Farm management to close the drainage spillage.
"We are calling upon the management of this farm to close drainage systems that lead to our farms and reconstruct the dam in order to control the underground spillage. This should be effected within seven days or else we will take the matter to court," Mary Chege, one of the residents affected by the farm's drainage waste complained.
The farm's management is however yet to respond to the complaints as efforts to reach them were futile.
