A nuts company in Thika's industrial area on Garissa Road has taken upon itself to help the local community stay in a clean environment by offering free garbage collection services.
Jungle Nuts Company which processes macadamia, peanut and cashew nuts has been offering free garbage collection services to residents of Makongeni, Kiganjo, Kisii among other estates for now close to three years.
The company's public relations director Hellen Wainaina said the programme is part of its broader corporate social responsibility aimed at transforming the lives of residents.
"We are involved in various CSR activities and garbage collection is just but one of them," said Wainaina in her office on Thursday during an interview.
She added: "Our decision to offer free garbage collection services was informed by the fact that our company is situated in a semi-urban area where the issue of garbage collection and general sanitation is a major challenge. Since we started the program many locals in the adjacent estates have benefited and continue to do so."
Wainaina said they operate a number of tractors which are able to penetrate even in the areas within the estates that have impassable roads. She says that the company will continue to offer the services to the residents and even seek to serve more people.
"Public sanitation and hygiene is something dear to us as a company and we hope that in the near future we shall be able to expand our garbage collection fleet and be in a position to serve more people," said Wainaina.
