Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama has promised to give each household in the county mosquito nets to prevent infections of malaria.

He said more than 450,000 nets are set to be given to Nyamira residents whereby one net will be shared by two people.

Speaking in his office on Thursday when he was flagging off the issuance of the nets, Nyagarama told residents to go to centres where they registered and all health centres so that they can be given the nets.

He asked Nyamira residents to use the nets given properly to prevent themselves against malaria infection.

“We have more than 450,000 nets ready for distribution to Nyamira residents in this heavy rain season. Get the nets at the centres where you registered. They will also be distributed in all our health centres,” said Nyagarama.

Governor asked people to report any calamities caused by heavy rains so the county can intervene and help them.

Executive Committee Member for Health, Gladys Momanyi told residents to use the nets appropriately and not use them in fencing of gardens.

“We know our people have a tendency of using nets to protect vegetables against poultry invasion to their gardens. This is misuse of the nets. They are made to protect us against malaria infection because like in this season of heavy rains, spread of malaria is usually at the peak.”

The national government through President Uhuru Kenyatta rolled out the distribution of 13 million nets to Kenyans to help in prevention against malaria in this El Nino season.
