Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama has assured residents that his government will set up an agricultural showground in the county to showcase its commodities.
Speaking when he flagged off a three-day free medical camp at Nyamira Primary School playground, Nyagarama said the county was losing a lot of revenue since it had no agricultural exhibitions.
Thus, he noted, many people travel to the neighbouring Kisii County denying the county an opportunity to generate income.
He said; “My government is considering upgrading the Nyamaiya stadium and transform it into an agricultural showground. We have had many challenges in the past where our people travel to Kisii County for the event and my government now has put measures in place to ensure that we have our own trade fair to build our economy”.
The county boss also urged farmers in the county to embrace technology in farming noting that agriculture is the backbone of Kenya’s economy and also a source of employment.
He also encouraged residents to add value to their produce to boost their incomes and livelihoods.
A section of the residents have welcomed the proposal by the county government saying it will help them share ideas with other farmers from other regions to boost production for better livelihoods.
It will also enlighten them on better farming techniques.
