Governor John Nyagarama has urged residents to plant more trees during the rainy season.
He said trees play an important role and that they should be planted in large numbers.
Speaking in his office on Thursday, Nyagarama said his government had started a campaign to plant over 100,000 trees across the county in a bid to conserve the environment.
He asked the constituents to join the campaign and plant trees in their homes to beautify the environment.
He said they tend to reach a target of one million trees and said that this could be achieved if all the residents joined hands.
He also asked them to fell all blue gum tress planted along rivers and springs as they suck a lot of water.
"To achieve the target of one million seedlings this rain season, all of us must join hands and ensure that all the eucalyptus trees are removed from the rivers and other swampy places to bring back the beauty of our environment," he said.
"We are experiencing unpredictable rain patterns because we have invaded our rivers with water sucking trees, this time the exercise of removing the trees from water sources will not stop its for our own good and for the future generations”, he said.
Nyagarama however called on the national government to identify places where they will plant the trees and asked for protection of the trees where he noted that previous exercises have been frustrated where the citizens destroy them.
