Hundreds of boda boda riders from Matutu in Borabu constituency took to streets on Monday over the alleged deteriorating security in the area.

The riders however used a different style from the common one of blocking roads and sometimes engaging police in running battles; they chose to block a major feeder road using their motorbikes and reverting to their homes.

According to their leaders Wilson Motari who later on spoke this Hivisasa writer after the group was persuaded by the police to unblock the road that connects Kisii-Nairobi highway, a number of riders have been either attacked or robbed by a gangster that has allegedly been targeting them.

“We are sad that no one is interested about our welfare now that some of us have lost their motorbikes and cash to an armed group that is targeting us. Even just on Sunday, two of our colleagues were attacked and badly wounded by the gang which seems to be using similar tactics,” he said.

He said that the group was angered that the police have failed to arrest a single suspect even after the atrocities enters a second month.

“We all have children and we depend on this business to fend our families. It’s also our concern that we pay taxes to get security yet nothing has been done by the police to arrest suspects even after making several statements for over a month now,” he said.

Matutu OCS Benjamin Mutinda said that the police were working overnight to corner the criminals but urged the riders to suspend doing businesses in the late night hours.

“We are really working hard to apprehend those responsible and hopefully it won’t take long. However, it’s also sad that the gang is using similar methods of disguising as customers to execute the crime. It’s for the good of the operators to desist from engaging in business especially during the night hours,” he said.
