Two prominent leaders from Nyamira have backed the August 2017 poll date and warned their colleagues against supporting the amendment motion being fronted by a section of Jubilee coalition leadership in the national assembly.

Parliament is divided over the date of 2017 elections after IEBC settled on August 8, 2017 against the wishes of a number of MPs who want the date to be pushed to December of the same year.

In a separate interview with the reporter on Wednesday, Nyamira Senator Mong’are Okongo and Kitutu Masaba MP Timothy Bosire insisted the need to have elections held in August as provided in the constitution.

“The constitution is very clear and we have to respect that. Elections shall be held in the second week of August of an election year and that is the law we have to respect. It’s too early to start amending the constitution and I plead with my colleagues to avoid bringing confusion on this matter,” Bosire said.

On his part, Mong’are said pushing the date forward was likely to throw the country to a possible constitutional crisis which would be detrimental in managing of the elections.

“If we push it to December, it means the elections cannot be managed by the current IEBC officials because their term expires in November 2017. This will even bring a lot of confusion because another new team would be mandated to oversee the polls, barely a month or so when they assume offices. This will be perilous in election management of our country,” he said.
