Nyamira County Assembly's Public Investment Accounts Committee has been directed to investigate the alleged embezzlement of Sh2.8 million by the county government, a week after governor John Nyagarama was summoned by Senate’s PIAC to clear the air about the allegations.

It was business unusual when Minority leader Jackson Mogusu took on the county government over alleged maladministration and overspending and questioned the commitment of PIAC.

Mogusu, who deviated substantially from the order paper that had listed disaster management in the county on top by decrying persistent corruption claims captured in the national dailies.

“Mr Speaker, we are the house that should oversight the executive but I think the committee in charge has done little. We hear that the executive is ordering a kilogram of sugar at an inflated price and nothing yet has come from the assembly,” Mogusu said.

Mogusu said Nyamira residents were substantially losing faith in devolved government due to ‘mysterious’ spending that is often revealed in the county.

“This is not the first time and I want to call for your direction so that we know why the executive is purchasing goods at inflated prices. We are not yet out of the Sh7 million gate saga and the flower project, and here is another one,” he said.

County Speaker Joash Nyamoko directed the Ezra Mochiemo led committee to investigate the claims and table the report in three weeks’ time.

“That is a genuine concern and I direct that the PIAC investigates the matter and tables the report in three weeks’ time. The matter is of public concern,” he said.

Senate's PIAC committee had accused the county government of exaggerating prices of basic commodities with a kilogram of sugar said to have been bought at Sh300 instead of Sh120.
