An exercise launched by Nyamira doctors based in Nairobi on Tuesday will see eye patients from three sub counties receive screening and subsequent treatment.

According to Dr Boniface Maisiba, the exercise is part of voluntarily exercise carried by Gusii Doctors Association based in Nairobi and it’s expected to take two weeks in Manga, Borabu and Masaba sub counties.

Dr Maisiba urged the residents to turn up in large numbers for the screening to avert incidents of partial and full blindness especially among the youth.

“We are volunteers specialising in eye treatment and we decided to initiate an eye checkup exercise in three sub counties. We are targeting people who are living with partial and full blindness and other eye defects that can be treated,” he said.

He said many residents were travelling long distances to get eye treatment and said the exercise will also see those found with eye defects receive treatment.

“It is quite absurd that people travel to Kijabe, Kikuyu and Sabatia for eye treatment because we do not have specialised eye treatment centers in Nyamira. Those who will be found with defects will definitely receive treatment,” he added.

He urged the county government of Nyamira to work with the association to organise for regular check-up exercises in the region.

“It will be appropriate if the county government works closely with us to make the exercise regular. We cannot be able to sustain frequent checkups as an association,” he said.
