Parents attached to Matongo Primary and secondary schools have appealed to the Ministry of Education and the county government of Nyamira to help them solve a toilet crisis at the centres.
Speaking at the institution on Monday, the parents led by Mr Jackson Omagwa said the state of the institutions' toilets was deplorable and called for emergency help from the ministry and government.
They said if the situation persists, the region is likely to be hit by cholera disease.
“As parents, we are concerned with the state of sanitation in our two schools. The Ministry of Education and the county government should chip in and remedy the situation before we start talking of a possible cholera outbreak because the secondary school is sharing toilets meant for their primary school counterparts. The situation is worrying,” he said.
They claimed that several attempts to get help from North Mugirango leadership have failed, with the area MP Charles Geni giving them little attention.
“We have written and even visited the constituency offices yet not help is coming to our way. Our MP is fully aware of what’s happening but he hasn’t done anything yet. It’s our humble appeal that something is done urgently for the sake of our children’s sanitation,” he added.
They also claimed that the money which the institutions were receiving from the government t was not able to fix the problems.
“The institutions receive funds which are only able to facilitate few functions. It’s not enough to help in construction of toilets. We have taken the initiative to appeal for help because our school heads have tried their best but in vein,” Omagwa said.
