Nyamira Senator Okong’o Mongare has joined the ongoing debate about closure of ten campuses affiliated to Kisii University by urging the Commission for University Education to lift the decision for a year to allow the institution meet specific requirements.

The commission had ordered closure of ten campuses affiliated to the institution citing poor service deliver and scarcity of facilities as the main reason behind their decision.

Mong’are, who was addressing residents of Metamaywa on Tuesday said the decision was ill advised since it would be difficult to relocate student to the institution’s main campus.

“We all want delivery of quality education but I am not impressed with the way the commission handled the issue. It will be difficult for the institution to relocate thousands of the students to the main campus which is already crowded. It will be appropriate if they are given a year to put their house in order in case there are issues to do with facilities,” he said.

Mong’are also suggested consolidation of proxy campuses as also an alternative to the stalemate but insisted on giving the institution time.

“My decision still remains that the institution to be given a year to meet the so called required standards by the CUE however, it will also be appropriate for the institution to amalgamate campuses which are close to one and that’s a good idea,” he said.

Among the campuses that the institution was given a 90-day ultimatum to close include Ogembo, Eldoret, Nyamira and seven others.
