Nyamira South sub-county residents have been called asked to collect their national identification cards so that they can participate in the voter registration exercise expected to start in February.

Sub-county Registration Officer George Omwange said currently, their office has more than 500 uncollected IDs which have been there for more than three months.

“It is quite unfortunate that while some applicants are very eager to get their identity cards, those whose cards are available have not collected them,” added George.

Asked whether the applications are likely to increase as the 2017 general election approaches, Omwange said the trend would largely depend on how politicians mobilise their supporters to acquire the crucial documents.

The officer was addressing residents who had gone to collect their identification cards at Nyamaiya ward offices on Monday.

This comes barely days after area politicians strive to mobilise residents to register as voters whose requirement is an ID.

The Independent and Electoral Boundaries Commission recently announced that the next general election will be in August 2017.
