Kisumu Senator Prof Anyang Nyong’o has accused the government of over burdening the common Kenyans in the wake of a crumbling economy.
Nyong’o said increasing taxes on key essentials that benefits the local person is a clear testimony that the government is targeting ordinary Kenyans.
He said the government ought to have increased taxes on other goods that don’t have a direct bearing on the lives of majority of Kenyans.
“The government could have increased taxes on cigarettes and alcohol drinks and not daily essentials Kenyans rely on,” he said.
Speaking in Obunga slums in Kisumu on Tuesday when he led a team of researchers from Sweden who had carried out research work on solid waste management, Nyong’o said Kenyans are soon getting help from the International Monetary Fund.
He said with the kind of happenings in the country’s economy, the fund will move in but with conditionality.
The Senator said the only option the government has at hand is to continue imposing heavy taxes on Kenyans to be able to remain afloat.
He said the government has also sought for help from IMF to be able to pull out the country from the mess.
Nyong’o hinted that Kenya might fall into Greece situation.
