At least 100 police officers will be deployed at Kisii University and its environs ahead of the institution’s 3rd graduation ceremony, area OCPD has said.

Speaking in his office during the press briefing about the status of security in the town, Tom Mutisya said the December 11 event is likely to attract thousands of people from across the country and said the police were prepared to handle the masses.

Mutisya said the police will take over all the entrances to the institution to frisk those attending the ceremony to prevent any insecurity incident.

“This is one of the most secure towns in the country and we are not taking anything for granted. We have assigned 100 officers who will be in charge of security in the institution during the graduation so that we combat any attempt of terrorism,” he said.

He said the officers will be making patrols around the institution prior to the main event and urged students to report cases of people who may attempt anything suspicious.

“We understand their tactics and there is no room for that. Even right now, our officers are patrolling the institution and we urge students to report any suspicious people,” he said.

His remarks were echoed by the institution’s Vice-chancellor Prof John Akama who urged students to be vigilant to saying safety was being taken seriously.

“I have spoken to the OCPD and he has promised his support. It’s now upon us to work with the security groups to report any incident that may be viewed as a threat to security,” he said.
