Members of parliament should only be paid up to the date of the next general election as stipulated in the constitution, nominated Senator Janet Ong’era has said.
Ms Ong’era’s remarks come after a section of MPs are reportedly seeking compensation between August 2017-March 2018, the month when their five year’s term ends.
But on Sunday, Ong’era dismissed the argument citing Article 102 of the constitution in her defense which says ‘the term of each house of parliament expires in the date of the next general election’.
“I am really worried that some of my colleagues are pushing for illegal payment between August 2017 March 2018 when our term ends. But the argument is flawed because article 102 is very clear. As leaders, we should not mutilate the very supreme law that we inaugurated recently,” she said.
She said the move will set a bad precedence in the country and would amount to daylight robbery against the public coffers.
“As leaders, we should respect the law failure to which, we are likely to set a bad precedence. The tax payers’ money ought to be respected and none of us deserves the pay some of us are pushing for. It’s illegal and is likely to through our country to the state of anarchy,” she added when addressing residents on Mogonga.
She urged speakers of either houses - senate and national assembly - to reject any motion seeking compensation saying it will be a letdown to Kenyans.
