Tea farmers in Nyamira have a reason to smile, following the heavy rains that have pounded the county in the past few weeks as it has guaranteed them better pay for their harvest.
In an interview with some tea farmers in Kebirigo and Makairo areas in Nyamira South sub-county said that that they have been able to meet their daily target since tea now has sprout.
According to Jemimah Nyaanga, a tea farmer, in an ordinary day, he is able to pick up to 100kg which has not been the norm in the past where she has been picking around 50-60kg on the picking day in his half-acre tea plantation.
She, however, explained that this has not always been the case as she could barely meet half her target in the months of February and March.
Ms Nyaanga explained that despite the increase in production, tea prices have taken a nose dive in the past few weeks, saying increased production will not necessarily translate to better pay for the growers of the cash crop following the performance at the international market.
It is, however, not all good news for the farmers in Makairo area in Nyamira South sub-county even with the increased output as some of their yields are not taken on time, caused by the bad state of roads in the area.
