The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has been challenged to deploy more teachers in both primary and secondary schools in Kisii County to combat understaffing.
Speaking on Monday at Mobamba Secondary School, Kisii governor, James Ongwae, said many schools were under performing due to lack of enough teachers. He said many institutions have reported to the employer without any concrete success and have now turned the pressure onto the county governments for help.
''TSC has an obligation to ensure our institutions are equipped with enough teachers so that the performance is boosted. Many of our schools are trying to work with limited staff and this has hugely affected education delivery,'' he said.
Ongwae said students were struggling to catch up with the rest of the country and many institutions were unable to hire Board of Management teachers due to limited resources.
''Our children are unable to complete their syllabus in time simply because we do not have enough teachers. TSC ought to solve this crisis,'' he said.
The governor also urged TSC to resolve the pay hike crisis with teachers for the sake of combating persistent industrial actions in Kenyan schools.
''We know how the education sector has been facing challenges for a while now. TSC has enough resources to employ more teachers to our schools and also improve the remuneration of our teachers to prevent industrial actions by teachers,'' he said.
