Roads contractors in Kisii county have been warned against delaying executing their work in time with the county government promising to revoke the contracts and award them to willing bidders.
Speaking at Masise grounds on Sunday, county Governor James Ongwae said his government was keenly investigating a number of roads contractors who were allegedly working slowly despite the government having deadlines.
He said it was insincere of the contractors to be issued tenders and fail to meet the expectations of the county government and area residents as a whole.
“Contractors who think can win tenders and go ahead to slow down contractions of our roads should be very careful as the rule of contracting is clear that we only pay when the work has been done. It’s therefore, a shame that some can’t finish their work in time even though they are aware that we are working to meet deadlines,” he said.
The Kisii county boss challenged the ministry of roads and public works in the county to crack a whip on errant contractors who have ‘failed’ to impress.
“And that won’t be taken lightly. The department of roads should act on culprits so that we have contracts revoked and awarded to serious individuals. At the end of it, it’s the incumbent leadership that will be put on test,” he said.
He, however, cautioned the contractors against doing shoddy work which he said will be equally is penalized by having their payment withheld or cut down to compensate for poor work.
