Nyamira chiefs and their assistants have been told to liaise with the police department and arrest anybody suspected to be involved in female genital mutilation in the county.
Speaking on Monday in Nyamira town, County Commissioner Josephine Onunga noted that most of circumcision in region takes place during the December holidays.
"Many parents take their children through the initiation process during the month of December because of the long holiday. For this reason, I task all chiefs and their assistants to be vigilant and arrest anybody who takes a girl child through the ‘cut’."
He added: "Whoever will be compromised in his or her duty will be sent home with immediate effect."
She also warned the police against colluding with FGM suspects.
"Any police officer who will be found colluding with FGM suspects will not be spared either."
She urged the community, both men and women, to protect the girl child against the outlawed culture which she noted had rendered women in the county helpless.
"Our daughters are important but this cannot be the case if we don’t protect them. There are numerous issues related to the ‘cut’ among our daughters and those women who went through it can attest to that. Their husbands are looking down upon them among many other effects."
