Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has threatened to ban Harambees in the county saying they encourage corruption.
According to Oparanya who is also the ODM deputy party leader, the development of infrastructure is exclusively the role of the county government.
"We have to allocate money and develop infrastructure. Harambees should be restricted to churches because the government cannot build a church. I will ban Harambees because they encourage corruption," Oparanya was quoted by Star as saying.
Speaking at Kakamega High School during an annual general meeting on Saturday, Mr Oparanya claimed some politicians contribute their 'ill-gotten' wealth during harambees.
Oparanya who has of late found himself in a war of words with Senator Dr Bonny Khalwale who wants to unseat him in the 2017 elections said politicians should stop hoodwinking the voters using harambee donations only to come and collect the money later.
He also blasted the Jubilee administration for frustrating devolution saying that the counties are underfunded and the even the little money they are allocated is not sent at the right time.
