Kisii County government has contracted over 1,000 youths from the county to assist in mitigating El Nino rains effects.
Speaking during a senior county government officials' meeting on mitigation effects of El Nino rains, chairperson to the El Nino technical committee Zablon Ongori said the youths will be distributed to work in each of the 45 wards of the county.
The youths will be grouped and each group will have 20 individuals.
They will conduct emergency repairs of roads, opening up blocked drains, collecting garbage, cleaning markets and attending to any emergencies in the wards.
"Groups of youths have been contracted following a competitive process in line with procurement rules. They will be deployed to offer rapid response and ensure the county's economy is not disrupted," he said.
The county government this year set aside Sh30 million to handle emergencies resulting from El Nino rains.
So far the roads and public works department has began repairs of key roads in Kisii town and surrounding areas to ease transport challenges.
