A health enhancement and economic empowerment program targeting over 300,000 people is on-going in the Gusii region.

The program sponsored by a US-based food supplements manufacturing company, BF Suma Pharmaceuticals, entails training applicants on business skills and use of the supplements.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday during a training session for over 200 participants in Kisii town, the company’s regional official Susan Onyancha described the program a revolving fund.

"The program’s objective is to alleviate poverty and reduce unemployment levels in the community," she said.

Groups of youths and women, she remarked, could be advanced a maximum of Sh10,000 worth of the products to sell on a commission.

She disclosed since the initiation of the programme two years ago, some beneficiaries had improved their income to the tune of over Sh800,000 annually besides managing ailments through consumption of the supplements.

The official says that the programme deals with physical products and known diseases afflicting the people.

David Matoke,a lecturer at local medical training college stressed on the importance of the food supplements to the human body attributing lack of vitamins among other nutrients.

"As a medic, I encourage patients to take the supplements alongside prescribed conventional medicine for effective management of their diseases," he said.
