A section of parents in Ruaka town in Limuru Sub County have lauded the move by the Communication Authority (CA)  of Kenya to ban ‘sex’ talk shows and other explicit content that is aired on some radio stations and TV shows in the country.

The parents say that the move will save their children from moral decay which they claim some media outlets especially radio stations are perpetuating.

Speaking on Sunday, the parents said that the move by CA was timely.

“We had been waiting for a time when the government will take control and regulate what is printed, broadcast and aired on our TV screens radio and newspapers,” said Mercy Mueni, a resident.

Mueni said that most of the shows aired and broadcasted on radio and TV has negative influence on teenage behaviors.

Lucy Mwangi, a resident supported the government saying that moral decay was rising in the area. She observed that most programmes watched and listened to by teenagers have exploit content.

“At least now we are sure that our daughters and sons won’t be influenced negatively by the content they watch, listen to and read on the various media platforms,” said Mwangi.

Mwangi also supported the move by the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) to ban TV adverts and commercials that portray explicit content.

She said that most of the TV commercials are offensive and portray explicit content that erodes values and norms especially in children.

“It is most embarrassing when you are sited with your children and an advert with explicit content splashes on your TV screen,” she said, adding that the government should act firmly on producers of explicit content.

In new rules gazetted by the Communications Authority of Kenya, media outlets especially radio and TV will cease from broadcasting adult content between 5am and 10 pm.

According to Communications Authority, no broadcaster shall air programmes including call- in and discussion whose content is for adults only during the water shed period.

Speaking during an interview on KBC TV on Friday, CA Director General Francis Wangusi said that the new rules will be implemented immediately.

Wangusi said that CA together with other government agencies is keen to protect consumers from harmful content.
