Nakuru is a hotbed of talent and innovation and if well nurtured, can help end youth unemployment, a children officer has said.

Naivasha sub-county children’s officer John Chege, said modern society has stagnated development wise because a majority of parents and caregivers are forcing their children to remain in class at the expense of co-curricular activities that they could perform better if given the chance.

During a youths’ talent show held at the Nakuru Performer’s theatre on Monday evening, Chege called on society to recognise inborn talent saying if identified at an early stage and mentored well, it has proved to be a life changer in the lives of many people.

“As much as I support those who do well academically, my dream is to see my fellow young people from Nakuru lead decent lives courtesy of their talents and making good use of their innovative prowess. Each one of us has that special attribute that if well nurtured, will be our only source of livelihood,” he said.

He advised parents to make use of such talent shows especially during this festive season when most children are free so as to be assisted and guided on the right path of getting the best out of their children’s special capabilities.

“Such events are meant to identify, appreciate and challenge young talents into action. Here, we not only award but also get professional mentorship by individuals with experience in nurturing talent across the country,” he added.

Professor Hammo is a local stand-up comedian under the Laugh Industry label that has managed to make the county proud at the East African region and Chege believes parents should take up the initiative of helping their children nurture their inborn talents.
