Nakuru West residents now want the National Transport and Safety Association (NTSA) to start a crackdown on bicycle riders who operate at night.

The residents claim the bikes have been responsible for many accidents in the area.

They cited Kolen, Kaptembwa, Rhonda and Shabbab as the areas with the most notorious riders.

“Why can't they be arrested yet every night the bodaboda operators hit people with their bicycles due to lack of lights,” said Peter Kosgei.

Kosgei, who is nursing a foot injury after being hit by a bicycle on Wednesday evening said most of the operators were often rude and abusive when asked about the lights.

Humprey Muchemi said they recorded at least 20 accidents from the bikes in two weeks.

“The most notorious place is the slope from Holy Cross to Kaptembwa where the riders are not even careful about how they move. This has lead to many school children being hurt in the process and in some cases nursing lifetime injuries,” he added.

They called on the Nakuru traffic department to address the issue saying they were neglecting a major role in their duties.

“Many have often caused distress to the motorists and drivers have ended up in fatal accidents trying to swerve away from them,” he added.

Attempts to get comment from the Nakuru Traffic Department were futile as no officer was willing to speak to this writer.
