Commuters plying the Kisumu-Busia highway are accusing matatus on the route of exploitation after a sharp increase in fare.

The increase in fare comes as students resume school this year.

Passengers who spoke to this writer on Monday at the Kisumu bus stage lamented  the move terming it an exploitation.

“This is totally wrong, the fare is too high. It is a form of exploitation”, Mirriam Aoko said.

“Does it mean that increase of people on the roads should lead to a hike in fares. In our endeavors to grow our economy, we should be fair to each other and ensure none  is exploited,” Jeremy Koech said.

However, matatu operators dismissed the allegations.

“We all know what this season holds throughout the years. We are just following a tradition that we found in the industry. Every time in January fares increase and everybody should know that and stop complaining,”John Omunga, a conductor, said.
