Police in Nakuru County have been advised to intensify the crackdown on illicit brews to stem their re-emergence
Rhonda residents Tuesday said there was need for police officers to enhance patrols in the semi-urban settlement so as to arrest traders engaging in the illegal venture, and whom they accused of operating with impunity.
"We want police officers to enhance patrols here in Rhonda so that traders selling illicit brews to our sons and daughters can be brought to book. They sell alcohol from daybreak to midnight,"said Thomas Njoroge.
His sentiments were echoed by Salome Etale who said young men had been turned into zombies by illicit brews which they consume with reckless abandon.
"Walk here at any time of the day and you will always find drunk youths. Those who sell them the alcohol have been bragging that they are untouchable and that's why we want the police to move in swiftly and arrest them,"she said.
Etale added that criminal incidents had hit an all time high in the area thanks to youths who engaged in robberies to sustain their thirst for alcohol which she said is being sold in almost the entire estate.
Three weeks ago, President Uhuru Kenyatta revived calls to crackdown on the brews and directed local leaders to partner with police to end the menace.
A week ago, several litres of chang'aa and other second generation liquor were destroyed by police in Nakuru's Mwariki estate
Officer in charge Patrick Makau promised to look into the matter
