Mombasa Law Court on Monday allowed the police to detain a terror suspect for 21 days to allow them complete investigations.

State Counsel Eugene Wangila had filed an application seeking court orders to detain Ibrahim Mafudh Ashur.

Wangila told the court that the accused was believed to be a member of the Al Shabaab terror group.

Ashur was arrested by Anti-Terrorism Police Unit officers on February 5 in Malindi within Kilifi County.

Police raided the accused’s house, arrested him and recovered two mobile phones, one laptop, one external hard disk and assorted DVDs.

In his application, Wangila asked Senior Principal Magistrate Richard Odenyo to grant the police more time, saying investigations are wide and complex and require more time to complete.

The court heard that the accused has great knowledge of Al Shabaab terror cells in Malindi Town and Mombasa County adding that investigations would involve forensic analysis of the items recovered from the accused.

“I do believe the suspect, who is a Kenyan citizen is connected to the offence or has information that may assist in our investigations,” said Wangila.

Magistrate Odenyo granted the application by the State Counsel and ordered for the accused to be remanded at Port Police Station.
