A politician from Nyamira County has asked the county government to investigate the role of agricultural extension officers.
The county government had recruited a number of extension officers and equipped them with motorbikes with an aim of improving their accessibility to residents.for agricultural seminars and expert advice.
Speaking at Bosamaro Ward during a burial ceremony on Thursday, former Kitutu Masaba MP Mwancha Okioma claimed that many of the officers were not doing enough to solve agricultural problems facing area farmers.
He claimed majority of them were using the public resources for their own benefit hence calling for immediate investigations.
“This is an agricultural economy and we expect that the extension officers will reach farmers and conduct civic education on farming. Some of them are using the motorbikes for their own gains and we call for investigations and prosecution of those failing to do their job,” he said.
Okioma said the county could be losing millions of shillings to workers who were sleeping on the job and urged the county government to take his claims seriously.
“The motorbikes are all over the county but when you trace the extension officers you usually find them conducting their personal businesses. They have taken the county for a joyride and serious actions should be taken against them,” he added.
