Kisii deputy governor has urged politicians to desist from early campaigns and called upon them to work with incumbents to improve the living standards of people.

Joash Maangi who graced a fundraiser for Bomachoge Youth Group Thursday said persistent politicking was detrimental to the county’s economic development and warned of under performance due to high political temperatures.

Maangi slammed politicians who were allegedly putting the electorate in an election mood and urged residents to shun them and work with the current leadership.

“I am one sad man when I see politicians igniting political temperatures in our county. Persistent politicking is detrimental to our economy and this will make us not realise our dreams of having a better and prosperous county,” he said.

According to him, the current laws were weak and could not prevent premature campaigns since they had become part and parcel of the daily activities.

“It will be appropriate if electorates shun these politicians for the prosperity of our county. It’s really disappointing that every day we will be talking of politics instead of working with the current leadership to initiate development projects for our people. Sadly, even our election laws are weak and cannot be used to punish those starting early campaigns,” he said.

Maangi challenged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to come up with strict rules that could be able to put politicians under scrutiny in a bid to eradicate early campaigns.

“We can do better as a nation if we realise the importance of doing away with early campaigns. They are the real menace to incumbent leaders and make them worry a lot. They make them lose focus and start strategising on how to defeat their opponents,” he added.
