Kisumu Senator Anyang Nyong’o has said that the building housing the offices of Kisumu County government belongs to the county.
Prof Nyong’o said that Prosperity House building is now the property of the county after the country embraced devolution.
He said the regional coordinator has no authority to demand back the building from the county government.
“I want to remind my brother Mutie that it is not business as usual, we have a county and the president is the governor, who inherited the building,” he said.
Speaking in Nyakach constituency on Friday during a funds drive for Paw Tenge secondary school, Nyong’o told Governor Jack Ranguma not to vacate but stay put and discharge his duties.
He noted that no amount of intimidation from the national government will make the county to abandon the building.
The senator said he will support Governor Ranguma since that remains his role to protect the interest of the people of Kisumu.
“I am in support of Ranguma on this, let the government know that we have stood our stand, we will not relent,” he said.
The building is now at the centre of a tussle between the national and county governments after the Regional Coordinator, Francis Mutie, gave a 90-day vacation notice.
Ranguma and his deputy Ruth Odinga have instead said that they will not move out or pay rent for the offices they are occupying in the 14-storey building.
