Residents of Gatundu North have been told to protect water catchment areas in an effort to conserve the environment and hygiene.
Beatrice Mueni, the sub county health and environment officer, said that waterborne diseases were a threat to consumers of river waters who have no boreholes.
Speaking on Tuesday, Mueni sounded a warning to people who wash their clothes along river banks and spill dirt into rivers, saying that the act was one of the sources of typhoid, among other related diseases.
"We have mothers who wash their clothes from the river emitting the dirt to the river that later cause typhoid and diarrhea. This must stop. I will engage in every water project which we have in every ward to stretch their tap water services to every village to avoid pollution of water and loss of lives though consumption of contaminated water," she said.
Mueni castigated people who cut trees near rivers, making it easy for rivers to dry, especially during hot weather seasons.
She noted that conservation of water catchment areas was a concerted effort of every citizen who benefit from water adding that her office was ready to prosecute those caught polluting rivers.
Mueni revealed that Kiambu county under the ministry of environment was committed to secure Kariri and Chania waterfalls as international and domestic attraction sites.
