Public Service Commission (PSC) Chairperson Margaret Kobia has said teachers must sign performance contracts as proposed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
In a statement sent to media houses, Prof Kobia argued that teachers are like other civil servants and ought to be ready for appraisals.
“Each head of institution freely negotiates the targets they can achieve within resources and environment at their disposal,” she said.
She called on TSC to agree with its employees on how the performance contracts will be employed.
Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) had earlier opposed the move, saying appraisals should only be done after the matter has been discussed by the Committee on Terms and Conditions of Service for Teachers.
