Women in Nyanza region have been urged to be in the forefront to fight for political leadership.
ODM party leader Raila Odinga said women have the potential and should not be underrated by men.
Odinga said women undergo difficult tasks in the society and should be given chance in the political stage.
He said many a times, women are overlooked by men when it comes to political contest.
“Women are very important people in the community and I feel bad when I hear some men throw abuses at women. They struggle with our children, our work is simple, to make them pregnant then leave them to carry the children in their womb for nine months,” he said a mid laughter.
Speaking to women leaders in the region in the sidelines of the Luo Cultural Day in Kisumu on Saturday, Raila said women must be supported to scale the political ladder.
Governors, Cornel Rasanga, Cyprian Awiti and Okoth Obado took the opportunity to call for support to women.
The three governors unanimously said that women must be in the lead in 2017 general elections.
“I want to appeal to you former Prime Minister, make sure that women are in the forefront in your campaigns in 2017,” said Governor Rasanga.
Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma was absent from the function after he missed his flight from Nairobi and his apology conveyed by Governor Obado.
The four counties of Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay and Migori came together to organise a cultural day as a way of preserving the tradition of the Luo community.
