When I was in high school some few years back, our then principal whom we had nicknamed ‘ngeli ya E’ was so hard on us that she banned us from various school functions or even receiving guests.
To her, the activities were affecting our performance in class and, therefore, lowering the mean score of the school. But they say all work without play makes Jack a dull boy so we needed these various interactions to not become too engrossed in school work and forget that we have a social life.
In this scenario, students are the ‘jack’. As heads of school try their level best to boost their mean score, they should understand that banning entertainment together with other school functions will never boost the mean score. If the students need time to relax, just allow them. It is hard to change someone’s mind by using force. Remember these are teenagers who are in adolescence stage. They have now started knowing their ‘rights’. Allow them to have these things once in a lifetime to make their minds relax.
Let the students have outings and innings. It helps them know how to relate with the rest of the people who are not in the same geographical area with them. This opens their mind and allows them to know how to get along with different people from different backgrounds easily.
