Gas users in Witeithie, Thika have been asked to be cautious when buying gas cylinders for use at home or elsewhere.
Job Njeru from the Petroleum Institute of East Africa said the gas and oil industry in Kenya has been infiltrated by quacks and unscrupulous businesspeople who are putting the lives of many people at risk.
Njeru noted that cases of theft and circulation of fake gas cylinders had increased in Thika, Juja and Ruiru towns recently.
He spoke in the area on Wednesday during a public safety education and awareness.
He warned gas users to only refill their cylinders at petrol stations, recommended retail shops, supermarkets and registered vendors' shops.
"As a professional body in charge of oil and gas industry in this country we have a responsibility of enlightening the public about the potential dangers of the fuels they use at home or elsewhere," said Njeru.
He added: "There are so many gas cylinders currently in circulation that have not met the safety standards and it is therefore important to be extra cautious. When refilling your gas, ask the vendor for the licence that permits them to stock the cylinders".
Njeru, however, noted that PIEA and other stakeholders were doing their best to curb the vice, and expressed optimism that the problem will be stemmed completely.
