Cereal farmers in the North Rift region have a reason to smile after a packaging company launched a new storage bag that will see losses incurred reduce.

The company owned by Agroz Group of Companies has produced a new storage bag that has four layers of polythene inside it.

The outer layer is a sack and protects grains stored in it from access by insects.

According to Agroz Company, the bags can store cereals for up to four years if they are well dried.

Speaking during a farmers forum in Eldoret, the company's founder Bubindher Singh said the new storage bags will help farmers in curbing losses caused by insects such as weevils.

“The new storage bag that we have launched here will help farmers in curbing losses that they have been encountering when storing their cereals, the bag has four layers of polythene papers inside and the outer one is a sack, the polythene will protect cereals inside and if there are insect they suffocate them,” said Mr Singh.

Moreover, the new sack will prevent cases of aflatoxin which render cereals in in-consumable.

He pointed out that farmers will no longer need to use chemicals in preserving their cereals because no insect can survive inside the sack.

“Farmers will no longer use preservation chemicals when storing their cereals because the bag has polythene papers inside it, there is no air entering in, and if insects enter, they suffocate,” he said.

The company is targeting farmers in the North Rift region where cereals are grown in plenty, where many of them have been using the ordinary sacks for storage.
